Whale shark season in La Paz

It’s November and in La Paz that means that the whale sharks (tiburón ballena in Spanish) have made their yearly return to feed in the shallow waters off El Mogote, just a short boat ride from the boardwalk. Over the past several months, RED Travel México has participated in a process together with other local tour operators and state environmental authorities to reduce the impact and improve the overall experience of whale shark observation in the Bay of La Paz. RED Cofounder Luis Garduño was chosen by his peers to represent tour operators in this ongoing process to implement the best practices that will make whale shark observation in La Paz an example for responsible wildlife tourism throughout Mexico.

Based on data from our colleagues at Whale Shark Mexico, environmental authorities shortened the whale shark observation season, from October through the end of April.
