La Paz, Puerto de Ilusión

As its name denotes, La Paz truly is the “city of peace”. While it has grown over the years, the tranquility and small town feel still make La Paz such a special place, for visitors and local residents alike.

Travelers from within Mexico outnumber international visitors, both of whom are welcomed by the laid back, friendly nature of paceños. With an international airport just 10 minutes out of town and multiple daily shuttles to the Los Cabos Airport, it’s easy to get here and away from just about any destination.

RED Sustainable Travel happily makes its home in La Paz, an easy jaunt from the communities where we operate, in Magdalena Bay, Sierra la Giganta, and Cabo Pulmo. If you are travelling with RED, make sure to save some extra time to spend in La Paz, home to many of the Sea of Cortez’ natural wonders. Take a day trip out to the magical Espiritu Santo Island, and hop in the water to swim with sea lions and multitudes of fish. Or paddle an SUP around the bay, watching for dolphins along the way. Rent a car and head out to Balandra beach, the pride of La Paz, ringed by dense mangroves and alluring geologic formations. Or just kick back and take a stroll around the colonial city center and down along the waterfront malecón. Fresh seafood, street vendors and gourmet Mexican cuisine will keep your stomach more than satisfied. On your next trip with RED come visit La Paz, Puerto de Ilusión.

Another great tour is being able to swim with the Whale Shark. I had that opportunity a couple of years ago and it was truly amazing and humbling. La Paz is one of only three or four places in the world where you can do this and it’s an opportunity not to be missed.
