Espiritu Santo Island Private Snorkel

Take a day to explore Espiritu Santo Island on a private snorkel trip. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to turquoise water, multitudes of fish species, and resident sea lions. Here, you can snorkel with sea lions,* explore the island on foot, relax and enjoy a scrumptious lunch. (Specific dietary needs taken into account). Every day the island offers a unique opportunity for adventure. Our captains and top naturalist guides will make sure you get the most of your experience. Our outboard skiffs are equipped with full shade, seat cushions, and even a private marine toilet. The trip returns to La Paz by 5 p.m.

*During the sea lion mating period, from June 1st through August 31st, sea lion observation takes place from on board our boats. After observing the sea lions aboard the boat, we will travel to a snorkeling site away from the rookery to snorkel with tropical fish.

Once you arrive at the sea lion colony (roughly 1.5 hours), jump in the water accompanied by your guide to snorkel with the sea lions and observe tropical fish*. Trip Impact

BUILDING LOCAL ECONOMY

At RED Travel México we see the operations of our trips as a chance to make a positive impact in our local economy. Martha and Juan live in one of the oldest fishing communities in La Paz, Barrio Manglito. We met them at their small restaurant that serves up a range of tasty dishes. As participants in a project to repopulate the La Paz Bay with scallops, Martha and Juan shared RED’s vision, and were open to receiving training as part of joining our operations. While you may never meet them, if you visit Espíritu Santo Island, Balandra Bay, or observe whale sharks with RED, Juan and Martha’s work contributes to your experience and makes up an important part of our operations and our value chain. Each day Martha and Juan prepare the food for our day trips, ceviche made from locally caught fish, quinoa salad, and naturally flavored waters made from seasonal fruit. They deliver the food in coolers and glass containers, returning in the afternoon to collect the containers which are washed and reused for the next trip (no plastic waste!). Any organic waste goes into their compost system at their home, where they raise some of the fruit and vegetables that end up on the menu. While we could probably find an easier or cheaper way to provide meals on our day trips, it is important to us to know that Martha and Juan put their heart and soul into their meals. Our travelers agree, commenting that our food sets us apart as a tour operator. Good food + community impact = a winning operational model.

Traveling Roots and whale shark ambassadors – Raising awareness with local youth

We can’t appreciate what we don’t know first hand. RED provides scholarships to underserved local youth to visit Espíritu Santo and to snorkel with whale sharks with a goal to foster stewardship and to promote equal access for all to the natural wonders that make La Paz such a unique destination.

Strengthening individuals families and microenterprises in rural communities

RED’s co-founders founded an independent, nonprofit arm, Red de Turismo Sustentable y Desarrollo Social AC, using our tourism expertise to create a micro-enterprise training program that benefits budding family enterprises throughout Mexico.

Packing & luggage

You probably have everything you need for your upcoming trip with RED Travel México, so don’t worry about rushing out to buy the latest high tech gear. If you don’t, you can probably borrow it. That said, there are a few essential items that you should bring with you. We recommend bringing a medium sized duffel bag or suitcase and a small daypack. Pack for cold and hot as we get drastic temperature swings and wind and a setting sun can turn a hot day into a cold night quickly in the desert.

  • hat
  • sunglasses
  • long sleeve shirt for sun protection
  • bathing suit
  • long pants and shorts
  • sturdy shoes for walking/hiking and old tennis shoes or water friendly sandals
  • a windbreaker or other warm layer as it gets chilly when the wind picks up and the sun goes down
  • water bottle. Please bring your own water bottle, metal or plastic preferred
  • dry bag or ziploc is handy to keep valuables dry but not necessary
  • any personal medication you need
  • waterproof sunblock
  • did we mention to bring a water bottle?
  • cash for a post-trip ice cream or to tip your guide and captain (optional)
  • if you have a camera bring it! Also bring a case or bag to keep the sand and water out
  • a good attitude. Weather changes, food tastes different, speaking Spanish is harder than you remembered. Roll with it and have a good time!
