Father and Daughter Adventure with Ocean Champion Dr. Wallace J. Nichols

dad and teenager daughter

This Thanksgiving, we invite Dads to spend some truly meaningful time with their Daughters on a trip that will leave you both with unforgettable memories and shared experiences. Join scientist, author, water advocate and father Dr. Wallace J. Nichols with his 13 year old daughter on a natural and cultural experience that will strengthen the special bond between fathers and daughters.
This one of a kind journey will take you from the open waters of the Pacific Ocean to the tranquil beaches of the Sea of Cortez. Special guest, ocean champion Danni Washington (and her father) will join our expedition, meaning there’s 100% guarantee everyone will have a good time AND learn a lot!
Our journey will begin on the Pacific coast where will we take in the historic town of Todos Santos, try our hand at surfing with the help of a top-notch instructor, and release baby sea turtles into the Pacific with local conservationists at sundown.
Crossing the peninsula to the Sea of Cortez, we will head to Espíritu Santo Island to snorkel with resident sea lions and explore the ocean wildlife and the island’s other-worldly land and seascapes. At a secluded eco-retreat outside of La Paz we’ll learn to make tortillas, tamales and other Mexican delicacies and settle into rancho life. Head back home revitalized with memories that you and your daughter will share for a lifetime.
Space is limited on this one-of-a-kind trip. Leave the turkeys and mashed potatoes behind this year and reserve a place now for you and your daughter.
Note: for this special trip, RED has invited a professional photographer along to capture special moments.

November 25 – 29, 2015

5 Days / 4 Nights

Day 1 – Todos Santos (L, D)
Our guide will meet us at Los Cabos airport where we will board a van for the ride up the Pacific Coast to Todos Santos. Our hacienda is a leisurely walk to the beach, and close to the historic centro of historic Todos Santos. We will spend the afternoon exploring, learning about the history and culture of this place and visiting the local shops around town.

Day 2 – Surfing classes and sea turtle (B, L, D)

Early in the morning we will head to Cerritos beach for surf lessons, with waves appropriate for all surfing levels. Spend the day catching some waves, relaxing or reading a book. In the afternoon we will visit a sea turtle conservation project to help release baby sea turtles into the ocean where they begin their difficult journey towards adulthood.

If there are nesting turtles in the area, we will participate in a nighttime beach patrol, searching for nests and protecting the eggs. Tonight we get a good night’s rest, for tomorrow we head to the aquarium of the world.

Day 3 and 4 – Espiritu Santo Island (B, L, D)
Early in the morning transportation will take us from Todos Santos to La Paz where we will depart by boat to Espíritu Santo Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Our first stop is at the sea lion colony. You will have plenty of time to swim, snorkel and interact with the playful sea lions in the company of our naturalist guide. After climbing back on board, we will navigate the island in search of a pristine beach where we will take in a scrumptious picnic lunch. Our guides will give a talk about the natural history of the island, plants and mangroves, and you can ask all the questions you like, taking advantage of the presence of our guest hosts, ocean superstars Dr. J Nichols and Danni Washington. Relax, swim or take a nature hike on this island paradise. After dinner and the sun goes down we will settle into our camp to dream of sea lions.

Day 4 – From the island to the ecoretreat (B, L, D)
In the morning we will explore more of the island. After lunch we will bid farewell to this natural paradise and head to Rancho La Duna, a secluded natural retreat and working rancho located just outside of La Paz. Here we will learn about local culture, ranchero traditions and even learn how to make tortillas and tamales. Take in the bright night sky before heading to bed in the eco-bungalows.

Day 5 – Back home (B, L)
After breakfast we will depart for Los Cabos airport for the flight home. The memories, stories and photographs will tell the story of a lifetime.
