Jaime Campos recently joined RED Sustainable Travel, heading up communications and sales. RED Director Chris Pesenti sat down for a few questions with Jaime.
Chris: What convinced you to join the RED team?
Jaime: The innovative way RED merges conservation and social and economic development caught my interest at first sight. It is hard to find organizations, governmental agencies or private institutions that address both issues at the same time, you often see organizations focused on one or the other. I think RED has developed an innovative mechanism that creates economic opportunities and social development in local communities while conserving natural resources.
Chris: How do you see RED as an opportunity for your personal and professional growth?
Jaime: In my case, personal and professional growth has been linked for a long time. The personal satisfaction I get when I’m able to contribute to other’s well-being and my passion to interact with the natural environment has always motivated me to get involved in social development and conservation. My personal goals meet RED’s in the way the projects are developed, through social interaction and in conjunction with the communities. Professionally, I believe there is plenty of room to develop my knowledge, capacities and areas of expertise and at the same time contribute to the growth, and success of the organization.
Chris: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Jaime: It’s hard to envision myself 5 years from now, one month before I started my work at RED I didn’t have a clue I was going to end up living in Baja working in La Paz and other communities. I see myself focused on social development and conservation, but with plenty of stories and experience under my belt.
Chris: In your opinion, what does RED mean for tourism and community development in Mexico?
Jaime: I believe RED’s model should be considered for other community development projects where economic opportunities meet sustainable alternatives. I’m not saying this is “the model” to follow everywhere, since each region and community requires different strategies, but the way RED works together with the communities to create projects together is worth studying. In terms of tourism, we are lucky for the majestic landscapes and nature all around Baja California, which makes tourism possible. There are a lot of places in Mexico that could develop similar models for tourism development.
Chris: Does this seem like a job interview again?
Jaime: Yeah, kind of. (laughs)
