One of the things that sets RED apart is our hybrid model that combines a world class for-profit tour operator with a non-profit organization (asociación civil or AC in México). This model gives us a wide range of tools in pursuit of our objectives of creating sustainable employment alternatives, generating support for conservation of species and habitat, and promoting models of tourism that foster healthy communities and healthy ecosystems.
As cofounders of RED Travel México and Red Turismo Sustentable AC, it gives us tremendous pleasure to hand the reigns of the non-profit to Ixchel López. Ixchel studied biology with a focus on economics, and worked 6 years in Mexico’s environmental agency SEMARNAT before joining RED a little over a year and a half ago as Program Coordinator. Once on board, we knew Ixchel would rise quickly and we are confident that she will take the organization to new heights. Follow along as she takes the helm in implementing our microenterprise incubation program, community bat monitoring and reforestation in the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve, promoting responsible whale tourism in Magdalena Bay, and projects with the Natural Protected Areas Commission (CONANP) to create the management tools necessary to preserving species and habitat in the parks of Baja California Sur. Join us in welcoming Ixchel into her new role and follow along via facebook or www.redturismosustentable.org.
